Energy Sweep Volunteers Needed October 11th
Longs Peak Energy Conservation (a division of Boulder County Housing) needs your help. If you want to have a real impact on lowering the energy expenses of low and moderate-income households and increase their environmental awareness, the Energy Sweep is your perfect opportunity. Come join other volunteers in “sweeping” a pre-selected, pre-notified neighborhood in Boulder (Oct. 4th), or Longmont (Oct. 11th). You’ll go door-to-door in teams of 2-3, installing energy saving devices like compact fluorescent light bulbs and conversing with families on ways they can reduce their energy use while helping the environment. No experience is necessary but a mandatory 2-hour training is required (dates and location TBD). Minimum age for volunteering is 15. Spanish speakers are needed!

Governor’s Conference on Managing Drought and Climate Risk October 8 -11, 2008
Colorado Governor Bill Ritter invites you to attend the Governor’s Conference on Managing Drought and Climate Risk in Denver, October 8 -11, 2008. This comprehensive and diverse 2 1/2 day water conference will help water providers, planners, managers, and agency and local government officials assess drought risk, impacts, and preparedness in Colorado and the improvements that may be needed for management under different conditions such as climate change. Conference goals are to share information and experience on drought preparedness and planning strategies, to announce plans for a comprehensive State Drought Plan, and to identify pathways for adaptation to the impacts of climate change and demands on water resources in the State.
|
The Colorado River Basin has been undergoing the effects of prolonged drought since 1999. The region, including the State of Colorado, has experienced droughts in the past; however, the present and future reliability of its water resources face the combined effects of increased growth, changing landscapes, and climate change. Climate change, together with natural variability and increasing demand, may lead to the State of Colorado and the region experiencing drought conditions rarely or never observed in the historic record. Preparedness is the key to successfully addressing the challenges of increasing drought risk and demands on water availability. Drought preparedness includes drought early warning and mitigation planning, implementation of proactive adaptation measures, and increased public awareness. |
Please join Governor Ritter and other water professionals and stakeholders to confront these vast challenges facing Colorado and collectively identify solutions.
