Are You Needlessly Flushing Water (and Money) Down the Toilet?
Toilets are by far the main source of indoor water use in the home-- accounting for nearly 30% of residential indoor water consumption
Conventional toilets manufactured before 1994 use between 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush (GPF), compared to just 1.6 GPF in toilets manufactured after 1994. The performance of low-flow toilets has improved dramatically since they first appeared on the market, with many independent third party organizations conducting rigorous performance reviews of popular toilet models. The EPA is even labeling toilets that meet EPA specified water saving and performance standards as “WaterSense” certified, so that consumers can easily identify which products they should buy. If you do decide to replace old toilets with low-flow toilets, check with your water provider first to see if they offer any rebates and to check which models qualify. Wonderland Hill Resident Organizes Neighbors for Energy Audits, Insulation, and Solar Improvements
Doug Smith encourages his HOA to take energy-efficiency measures
"For most of my adult life, I have been interested in conserving energy and resources and have recently become intrigued (my wife says obsessed) with alternative energy,” says Wonderland Hill resident, Doug Smith. He would come home from work and talk to his wife, Ellen, about energy efficiency and the possibility of adding solar and making other improvements to their townhome. Finally, Ellen suggested that he present his ideas to the HOA board, so he did. At first, Doug was skeptical that his homeowner’s association (HOA) would go for it. It turns out that energy bills are something that bind us all, and are some bills we all think about reducing. At the meeting an ad hoc committee was formed with Doug at the helm.
To date nine of Doug’s neighbors have had a REAP audit completed for their homes and three more are scheduled. Similarly, nine homeowners are in various stages of completing contracts for solar installations.

The CRC Needs Your Support
Contribute online and help the CRC continue its programs
Thanks to contributions from people like you, in 2008, the CRC was able to empower a record 15,000 people to live a more sustainable life. As pleased as we are with this accomplishment, much work remains to be done. Every week, we receive a growing number of inquiries from folks who are interested in learning how they can conserve energy and water or reduce waste. To continue to provide answers to these questions as well as quality programs like Slow the Flow, REAP, and ReSource, we need your financial support.
Here are just a few examples of what your gift will help the CRC achieve in the coming year:
- Slow The Flow will conduct 1,250 free irrigation inspections resulting in a 40% reduction in outdoor water use for each home inspected.
- REAP (Residential Energy Audit Program) will prevent approximately 23,000 tons of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere by conducting 750 low-cost energy audits and helping homeowners identify ways to reduce their energy consumption.
- ReSource will divert more than 2 million pounds of building materials from the landfill, thus reducing CO2 emissions by about 300,000 pounds.
Beyond helping us carry out these important programs, contributing to the CRC offers tangible benefits to you. With a donation of $50 or more, you will receive the Spring and Fall issues of Conservation Magazine, plus our monthly e-newsletter and personal invitations to our workshops and events. Contributors at the $1,000 level and above receive invitations to VIP events including private tours of Boulder’s greenest homes and complimentary tickets to the CRC’s Annual Dinner.
