Homeowners can apply for rebates through solar hot water pilot program

Savings up to $3000

Boulder County residents who are installing solar hot water systems for their existing homes or incorporating the systems as they construct new homes can now participate in a pilot program that offers rebates of up to $3,000 for the renewable energy-powered systems.  Boulder County, the Center for ReSource Conservation and the City of Boulder are piloting a new rebate program from the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) Residential Solar Program for Solar Domestic Hot Water systems.

The Center for ReSource Conservation is administering the program. Existing homes will be required to receive an energy audit from the Residential Energy Audit Program (REAP) to be eligible for the rebate. New construction in the jurisdiction of Boulder’s Green Points or the County’s BuildSmart program will meet efficiency performance requirements through those regulations.

Rebates will be offered in a lottery format. The first 15 applications drawn will receive a confirmation letter that guarantees them a rebate payment so long as their system is installed by the end of 2008. A signed contract with an installer must be submitted to the Center for ReSource Conservation within 60 days of winning the lottery, and installation must be completed by December 1.

To be included in the lottery, send your name, address, phone number and email address to reap@conservationcenter.org starting on Monday, July 14th.  The title of the email must state Solar Thermal Rebate Lottery.  The lottery will be Monday, July 28, at noon.

Is your air conditioner running too much?

Residential Energy Audit Program

A properly insulated and air-sealed house will prevent you from losing cold air to the outside.  Shutting your blinds on the south side of your house in the morning will help keep the heat out; potentially causing you’re A/C to kick on less.  Having an energy auditor visit your home will expose you to many cooling and heating tricks to help keep you comfortable and lower your bills.

Because insulation and air-sealing are such important energy conservation measures, we are offering rebates for 20% or up to $300.  Rebates apply to insulation and air-sealing of attics and exterior walls.  You must first get an energy audit through the Residential Energy Audit Program to be eligible.

Saving Water at the Regans

Lafayette family cuts outdoor water use by 45%

“The yard is not my thing, ok?  It’s not at all my thing,” explains Mike Regan of Lafayette.  “I want to do the least amount of work and get the most out of it.  I have enough time to do what needs to be done, but I only want to do what really NEEDS to be done.”

Regan, father of four and employed at Pearl Izumi, doesn’t have much time to spend on his lawn.  “I’m a busy guy…” he says, “my kids take up most of my free time, and what little is left I’d much rather spend on a bike ride.”  However he has recently made small fixes to his sprinkler system that “make my lawn twice as green with half as much water.”

ReSource can help you save money

While saving the environment

ReSource, the construction and demolition waste diversion program of the CRC, has facilities in Boulder and Fort Collins ready to serve you 7 days a week.  The innovative program accepts reusable building materials from contractors and the public and resells the items back to the community for 50%-90% below retail cost.  With your support, ReSource has diverted over 2,000,000 pounds of reusable material from our landfills every year.

With the recent decline in the housing market, now is a great time to utilize the great discounted materials at ReSource to increase the character and value of your home. By doing this you are not only directly supporting the continued operations of the program and voting with your dollar for locally-ReSource’d materials which greatly reduce our impact on the environment; you are also saying, “YES! I believe in a sustainable future for our community. Reduce, reuse, ReSource!”

For more information on ReSource and deconstruction, call 303.441.4367 in Boulder and 970.498.9663 in Fort Collins. You can also visit our website at www.resourceyard.org for a selection of services and select product descriptions.

Real People Making a Real Difference

Kelly Simmons Lives a Sustainable Life and So Can You!

“Somebody has to lead. Somebody has to show that stuff can be done…and that it’s possible…and what is possible.”

Kelly Simmons, Director of the Boulder Sustainability Education Center and the fourth recipient of the “Emerging Leader of Boulder” award, is that someone. As I sit in her dining room, gazing out at her expansive, lively backyard, I am instantly inspired by the numerous ways one person can lead a more ecologically and socially sustainable life. Kelly happens to employ a lot of them because it matters. Being a “doer” and a mother, she can’t help but feel responsible for her impact on the environment and wants to look her son in the eyes and say she did everything she could.

The Boulder Sustainability Education Center (BSEC) is a local non-profit with a mission to serve as a local hub for hands-on, practical education in sustainable living, tailored to Boulder’s unique bioregion. Simmons’ hope is that people will walk away from her classes and workshops with more insight on how to change their values and their behaviors and why this matters. “We can all begin to lead in our own way,” she says. “I have great faith in human ingenuity.”
