The Douglas County Rotary Nozzle Retrofit Pilot Program

What is this program?

This program provides free retrofits of spray sprinkler nozzles and heads with a more efficient nozzle, a rotary nozzle.  A team of high school students, supervised by a CRC irrigation auditor, will perform each retrofit.  The project is a collaborative effort between the Douglas County Water Resource Authority, Arapahoe/Douglas Works!, the Douglas County School District, local water providers, and the CRC.

What are rotary nozzles?

Rotary nozzles are a recent innovation in sprinkler technology.  When compared with traditional spray nozzles, rotary nozzles water more evenly, have fewer problems with misting, and have a lower precipitation rate (which reduces runoff and soil erosion).  Because they provide better coverage, retrofitting an existing irrigation system with rotary nozzles can significantly improve the appearance and health of a lawn and, reduce water usage.

Who will perform the retrofit?

Retrofits will be performed by teams of students enrolled in Douglas County School District’s School to Work Alliance Program.  Each team will be led by a professionally trained CRC irrigation auditor.

What happens during a retrofit?

The retrofit team will arrive at your house and perform a preliminary inspection of your sprinkler system.  If they find areas appropriate for a retrofit, they will replace roughly 20 sprinkler nozzles and/or heads.  After replacing nozzles, the team will perform a quality assurance test on your system, and provide you with a new watering schedule for retrofitted areas.

Steps to a Retrofit:

  1. Review your eligibility.  If you are a residential customer who receives water from a participating water provider and you have an underground sprinkler system, you are eligible.  At this time, HOAs and commercial properties are not eligible. Participating water providers:
    1. Town of Castle Rock
    2. Castle Pines Metro District
    3. Castle Pines North Metro District
    4. City of Lone Tree (Denver Water) (Full for 2010)
  2. Request a retrofit. Click here to complete the request form online, or call (303) 999-3820 x217.  As this is a pilot program, only a limited number of retrofits are available in 2010.  These retrofits will be available on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Schedule your retrofit. After we have received your request, we will contact you to set up an individual appointment.
